As the first film heavily implies that the plot of the first film took place mostly in Arthur’s head, and this new one will probably be too. So these two films can interact with each other and exist in the same world, without either film being entirely connected

Miyazaki didn’t come pick up his last Oscar so that’s the only thing that makes me think the Academy might not be happy about giving him another one, but it’s just too beautiful of a film.
